The launch of Chinese electronics powerhouse Huawei’s upcoming flagship smartphones is fast approaching, and VentureBeat has learned that the curved-screen variant codenamed Long Island will come to market as the Mate 9 Pro. VentureBeat recently reported its existence and published the first (small) renders.

Continuing the New York-themed pre-release naming scheme, the standard Mate 9 is codenamed Manhattan.

These are 5.9-inch handsets powered by HiSilicon Kirin 960 systems-on-chip, and supported by 4GB of RAM, with storage capacities ranging from 64GB to 256GB. Whereas Mate 9 features 1080p full-HD resolution, the Mate 9 Pro steps up to 1440 x 2560 QHD.

This level of resolution, generally considered overkill, is being utilized to maximize the 9 Pro’s Daydream VR experience. Someone familiar with company plans said that only the Pro will offer the new Android 7.0 Nougat feature.

The Mate 9 pairing will also feature the same dual-sensor, dual-lens camera as the company’s first-half flagship, the P9, though its specs have allegedly been improved.

Huawei is expected to unveil both models at a November 3 launch event in Munich, Germany.
